In Memoriam: Camille Duby (1939–2020)

Camille Duby passed away on September 22, 2020 at the age of 81. She was elected ISI member in 1985. Camille was an alumni of the prestigious Ecole Normale Supérieure (ENS) where a large number of French or even foreign researchers and teachers were students. She was professor emeritus at AgroParisTech which is considered a leading high level academic institution in life sciences by training engineers end researchers and producing and disseminating knowledge in partnership with the major research organizations and professional technical centers in the world.

After her graduation from ENS in 1962, Camille became a member of the chair of mathematics at the Institut National Agronomique Paris-Grignon (INAP-G) which was the former name of AgroParisTech. After a secondment to the Institut National de Recherche Agronomique, she was one of the first female professors at INAP-G and played an essential role in the creation and development of the Department of Mathematics, Computer Science and Physics which trains future engineers in physical and mathematical modeling and in new digital technologies. She is remembered as a demanding teacher who asked for and obtained the best from each student and a rigorous researcher who succeeded in installing a culture of dialogue allowing a fruitful collaboration.

Camille was an active member of the French Biometric Society (SFB), the French part of the International Biometric Society, where she was the French representative. As the representative of the SFB, she was, for a while, an ex-officio member of the French Statistical Society (SFdS). Until recently, she was also an active member of the SFdS specialized group on teaching statistics.

She participated in several ISI activities and was a member of the Local Programme Committee of the 47 th ISI session held in Paris in 1989.

Her colleagues and friends will miss Camille and share the sadness of her husband Jean-Jacques and her family.
