In Memoriam

It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden death of Professor Tim Dunne on 17th of April 2016. As an active and devoted member of the ISI, Prof. Dunne played an indispensable role in the work of various ISI Committees. He was also member of the ISI Council from 2007-2011. Prof. Dunne’s death is an enormous loss for the ISI and we will miss him greatly. We extend our sincere condolences to his wife and all of the Dunne family.

Canadian Census of Population and the Mandatory Long Form

ISI is pleased to note the decision of the new Canadian government to reinstate the mandatory long form for the 2016 Canadian Census, thereby restoring data quality for small population data. This decision follows on from the controversial decision in 2010 to make the form voluntary. ISI Declaration on Professional Ethics and the UN Fundamental Principles both stress the need for professional judgements on issues of methodology. See the Statement of Statistics Canada on the 2016 Census of Population and the mandatory long form for details.

Argentine Statistician Cleared on Charges of Publishing Alternative Price Indexes

The long ordeal of Graciela Bevacqua and her colleagues with the Argentine government—which included being fired from its National Institute of Statistics and Census (INDEC) division in 2007 and then facing criminal and civil charges in 2011—is nearing an end.   • The programme schedule for the IASE Satellite Conference scheduled for 22-24 July 2015 is now available at the conference website. The main language of the conference will be English, but some workshops and paper sessions will be held in Portuguese and Spanish. Regular registration through the website is available until 13 July 2015.
  • The 13th International Conference on Mathematical Education will be held from 24 to 31 July 2016 in Hamburg, Germany. There are over 50 topic study groups at the conference. Two might be of specific interest to IASE members: TSG 14 Teaching and learning of probability and TSG 15 Teaching and learning of statistics. On 26 March 2015 the General Assembly of the Netherlands Society for Statistics and Operations Research (VvS+OR) unanimously approved the proposal of its Executive Board to appoint Gerrit J. Stemerdink (ISI member and a long-time volunteer at the ISI Permanent Office) as an Honorary Member for his many valuable contributions to the work of the Society – and Statistics in general – over a period of more than 40 years.
