The working group was launched by co-chairs Juergen Symanzik and Daniel Jeske in order to identify and coordinate opportunities for the ISI and its Associations to help them improve their identity with data science research, education, and outreach.

‘Statistics for a Better World’ is a current catchphrase for ISI and data science has emerged as a more visible and publicly recognized label for problem solving. While difficult to precisely define, we know that data science involves the intersection of statistics, computer science, engineering, mathematics and individual domain expertise. ISI President John Bailer has tasked a working group to develop a strategy, material, and statement related to connecting and highlighting data science in the ISI. The working group was launched in November 2020 by co-chairs Juergen Symanzik (Utah State University) and Daniel Jeske (University of California, Riverside). The working group will be identifying and coordinating opportunities for the ISI and its Associations to help them improve their identity with data science research, education, and outreach. A panel discussion on the status of the working group is being planned for the 2021 WSC.
