Our Associations and Committees

The International Statistical Institute and its seven Associations, which cover a range of statistical areas and interests, make up the ISI family. Currently, the family has members from over 150 countries.

The idea of Associations — formerly called Sections — was introduced in 1947. While the first Association was formally adopted only in 1957, the fruits of this far-reaching and far-sighted innovation are clearly evident today with seven Associations which cover a wide spectrum of statistical sciences and applications. This change resulted in a new type of professional society, one that facilitated international communication among individuals with common interests.

The ISI family also includes the members of the  International Statistical institute, Associations, Committees, Affiliated Organizations, Special Interest Groups focus on matters of statistical interest that may reach across areas of statistics and/or link statistics with other disciplines and Outreach Committees aimed at collaborations with members from various regions of the world.

Associations

ISI Associations cover a range of statistical areas and interests, and together with the ISI, make up the ISI family.

The Associations participate fully in the ISI but also have their own governance structures, conferences (including satellite conferences to World Statistics Congresses), journals and awards.

Association presidents are members of the ISI Council and also meet as a group with the ISI Executive Committee. The ISI and its Associations work closely together to serve the needs of the international statistical community.

Committees

  • Standing Committees are components of the ISI’s organizational structure, along with the Executive Committee and the Council.
  • Operational Committees focus on the overall functioning of the ISI and its long-term concerns as an international body representing the statistical profession and community.
  • Special Interest Groups (SIGs) focus on matters of statistical interest that may reach across areas of statistics and/or link statistics with other disciplines.
  • Outreach Committees develop activities, networks and promote and represent the ISI and its Associations in different regions.

Affiliations

The ISI seeks active cooperation with other organizations and professional associations. With a view of encouraging intensive cooperation and communication, we have established cooperation agreements with a number of organizations.

Affiliated organizations are mainly professional associations that have entered cooperation agreements with the ISI with the aim of encouraging intensive collaboration and communication.
