International Year of Women in Statistics and Data Science

Join ISI in celebrating the International Year of Women in Statistics and Data Science (#IYWSDS) from May 2020 through July 2021. The ISI launched the celebration of IYWSDS on 12 May 2020 with commemorating the 200th anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s birth.

Florence Nightingale

Nightingale (12 May 1820-13 August 1910) was a British social reformer and statistician, and the founder of modern nursing. She came to prominence while serving as a manager and trainer of nurses during the Crimean War, in which she organised care for wounded soldiers. In 1860, Nightingale laid the foundation of professional nursing with the establishment of her nursing school at St Thomas' Hospital in London. It was the first secular nursing school in the world and is now part of King's College London. In her lifetime, Nightingale published work concerned with spreading medical knowledge. She was a pioneer in the development of statistical graphics to visually represent data and developed diagrams called coxcombs and used them to illustrate the various causes of death during the Crimean War.
