IBC 2020

30th International Biometric Conference (IBC 2020)

Going Virtual.

Dear Colleagues,

As you know, IBC2020 cannot proceed as planned this coming July due to the global COVID-19 pandemic. It is such a shame, especially since the Korean Region had been working so hard to arrange a welcoming and exciting conference for us all.

We have spent quite some time thinking through options and have decided that even postponing until 2021 could be problematic, since it is not at all clear when global travel will return to normal. Also, we know there are many options for other meetings next year including the various regional meetings that are usually held in the IBC off-year.  Indeed, the Korean Region are looking to run a small conference that incorporates some of the planned elements from IBC2020. Please stay tuned!

But the good news is that we are actively planning to offer some of the planned IBC2020 options virtually. We will be in touch with more detail in a week or so. Because of the time differences among us all, we plan to deliver our virtual IBC offerings over a number of weeks and will be picking a few time slots so as to make it feasible for everyone to join.

We will be asking a modest fee to participate in the virtual IBC2020, though there will be options for waived and reduced fees for members. Our top priority is to provide you, our members, with some useful sessions.

But if you are in a position to pay the fee (e.g. if your university or organization will cover it for you), we will be very grateful since this will help offset some of the significant losses IBS has incurred due to the in-person conference being cancelled.

We look forward to seeing you on line soon and in person before too much longer!

Sincerely,

Louise Ryan
IBC2020 Organizing President

6th International Conference on Big Data for Official Statistics

The 6th International Conference on Big Data for official statistics will take place from 31 August — 2 September 2020 as a virtual event due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The main theme of the Conference is "How can Big Data help in the COVID-19 response?" Related themes are: "How can Big Data support the monitoring of the progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals?" and "The need for global data collaboration on global emerging issues".

The Conference is organized by Statistics Korea and the United Nations Global Working Group (GWG) on Big Data for Official Statistics, which was created under the UN Statistical Commission in 2014.

The GWG provides strategic vision, direction and the coordination of a global programme on the use of new data sources and new technologies, which are essential for national statistical systems to remain relevant in a fast-moving data landscape. Over the years the GWG produced guidance through Handbooks and training materials on topics such as use of satellite data for estimating agricultural crop statistics, use of mobile phone data for measuring tourism statistics or use of scanner data for calculating price statistics. The GWG also built a digital collaborative environment (called the UN Global Platform) to work together on new data solutions with the whole statistical community and to learn together.

Use of new data sources and new technologies, such as AI and machine learning, can make statistical operations more cost effective and provide timelier, more frequent and more granular statistical outputs, which is especially important to support rapid assessment of the COVID-19 situation and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its 231 SDG indicators. This conference will demonstrate how that is possible.

CSM Randomised Controlled Trials Course

Now in its 18th year, the Centre for Statistics in Medicine (CSM)’s Randomised Controlled Trials (RCT) Course is ideal for anyone planning or actively involved in RCTs for healthcare evaluation, particularly those early in their career or looking for a refresher course. This 5-day course uses a problem-based learning approach to provide a thorough grounding in the principles and practice of planning, conducting, analysing, reporting, and interpreting RCTs, mixing lectures and small-group practical work. The interdisciplinary faculty includes registered CTU directors, clinicians, and statisticians, all with a wealth of RCT experience. Faculty includes CSM staff (e.g., Associate Prof Jonathan Cook and Dr Ines Rombach), wider University of Oxford staff (e.g., Prof David Beard and Prof Ed Juszczak), and those from further afield (e.g., Prof Mike Clarke of Queen’s University Belfast, Prof Richard Emsley of King’s College London, and Prof Graeme MacLennan of University of Aberdeen).

This year, in memory of course founder Prof Doug Altman, one sponsored place is available for a student or applicant from an LMIC (applications due 31 March). Sponsorship covers the course fee and accommodation at Merton College. Registration closes on 1 August 2020 or when the course is full, whichever is sooner.

Big Data Meets Survey Science (BigSurv20)

BigSurv20 will be held at Utrecht University, in Utrecht, The Netherlands. The conference offers an opportunity to address the ongoing paradigm shift in how researchers produce, analyze, and use statistics. The event is intended to foster communication, collaboration, and understanding between two groups: (1) computer and data scientists focusing on Big Data sources and analysis techniques, and (2) methodologists and social science researchers working with traditional sources of data collection and statistical analyses. By uniting efforts, we can identify and overcome academic divides and make unified "Big Survey Data" population inference a reality. Utrecht is located a convenient 25-minute train ride from Amsterdam airport, and has excellent train connections to the rest of Europe.
