30 August - 1 September IASC-ERS summer school on Advanced Methods in Sampling and Estimation in Finite Populations
The IASC-ERS summer school is organized by the Institute of Statistics, University of Neuchâtel, Switzerland.
The summer school is intended to provide training in special areas of statistics for PhD students, junior researchers and lecturers at universities. Professionals working in industry who are interested in the application of new statistical methods are also welcome to participate. Participants are expected to have good background in statistics at the M.Sc. level although not necessarily related to the subject of the course.
Probabilistic sampling methods from finite populations are used in many fields, from demographics, economics, public health to official statistics, but also in environmetrics or forestry. In this summer course we will start by introducing basic ideas of sampling from finite populations, as well as usual estimation methods. Advanced sampling methods will also be covered, showing recently proposed methods, such as balanced sampling, balanced spatial sampling, etc., as well as advanced estimation methods based on bootstrap in finite populations. The summer course will bring together the theoretical and practical aspects of sampling and estimating in finite populations. Exercises will be provided using the R software. Knowledge of R is not required (an introduction to R will be given), but knowledge of a statistical software is a must. The course is given at the M.Sc. level, and does not require preliminary knowledge of sampling and estimation in finite populations.

School year 2017 - 2018 The European Doctoral School of Demography (EDSD)
The European Doctoral School of Demography (EDSD) invites applications for school year 2017-18.
The EDSD is an eleven-month program that is offered every year, with the goal to provide students in the first year of their doctoral studies with an appropriate high-level education in demography. Students will acquire a solid knowledge base on causes and consequences of demographic change, population data, statistical and mathematical demography, as well as modeling, simulation and forecasting. The School's courses are structured in such a way that the students work on precise formulation of a thesis topic and early steps of their dissertations. Many of the School's courses concentrate on strengthening the quantitative and programming skills of the students. The language of the School is English.
In the 2017-2018 school year the School will be held at two different locations. The preparatory courses (from early September to mid-October 2017) will be offered at the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research in Rostock, Germany. The core courses (from mid-October 2017 until end of July 2018) will be held at MaxO--the Max-Planck Odense Center on the Biodemography of Aging. MaxO is located in Odense, Denmark and is a partnership between the Max Planck Society and the University of Southern Denmark.

21 – 24 September Mountain Village Science Series (MOVISS 2017)
We are pleased to invite you to Bio&Data, the first workshop of newly established “Mountain Village Science Series” (MOVISS). Bio&Data should be not a sequence of contributions as at an usual conference. It is rather a smaller, problem-driven meeting, full of discussions and posing questions about how to deal with chemometric data reasonably. As we are convinced that this is exactly what was missing at the meetings we have experience of. Four sessions devoted to the whole metabolomic process including the DOE, analysis, data processing and statistical analysis in the biosciences are planed. Each of the four sections will consist of two keynote contributions, followed by a coffee break to enhance discussion, brief contributions from selected participants (preferably those posing relevant questions/problems), and panel discussion. Finally, you can continue with the R Summer School from Sep 25-27, 2017 in Vorau!

11 - 13 October 2017 ASA Symposium on Statistical Inference
The 2017 American Statistical Association Symposium on Statistical Inference follows up on the historic American Statistical Association (ASA) Statement on P-Values and Statistical Significance. The statement called for moving statistical analysis and evidence-based decision making beyond “bright line rules” toward a “post-p < 0.05 era.”
Although the problems identified in the statement have been known for several decades, previous expressions of concern and calls for action have not fostered broad improvements in practice. Recognizing this failure and seeking to move beyond the “Don’ts” highlighted by the ASA statement—the inappropriate interpretations and uses of p-values and significance tests—the Symposium on Statistical Inference will focus on the “Do’s.” Discussions will center on specific approaches for improving statistical practice as it intersects with three broad components of research activities:
•Conducting research in the 21st century
•Using research in the 21st century
•Sponsoring, disseminating, and replicating research in the 21st century

3 – 4 January Workshop on Bayesian Analysis and Big Data Analytics Data analytics
Data analytics (DA) is the process of examining data sets with which conclusions are drawn about the information they contain with the aid of specialized computer systems and software. As organizations collect more and more data, managing and processing such voluminous data like retrieving, assembling, interpreting and presenting the data structure, and gaining meaningful insights into the data sets are the significant challenges and would become a critical aspect in every organization. The techniques of data analytics are widely used in organizations to enable them to make appropriate business decisions and are effectively adopted by scientists and researchers to verify the validity of scientific models, theories and hypotheses.
Bayesian statistical analysis has recently gained significant popularity among researchers of various domains and is carried out seamlessly to complex hierarchical models and realistic data structures.
The focus of this workshop is to provide a productive forum for exchanging ideas and information on current challenges, system developments, and practical experiences in the emerging field of data analytics and to provide a comprehensive learning experience on the principles of statistical methods and data analysis in a Bayesian framework.
