Prof. Elena N. Naumova
Elena N. Naumova is Professor of Mathematics at Tufts University (Boston, USA), Christian Medical College (Vellore, India) and Director of the Tufts Initiative for the Forecasting and Modeling of Infectious Diseases (InForMID). Her research focus is on the development of analytical and computational tools for understanding the transient biological processes and outbreak forecasting. She is actively promoting the use of novel data sources, satellite imagery, computer-intense simulation techniques, and dynamic mapping in public health applications. Dr. Naumova coauthored over 200 publications, has over 30 years of experience in conducting research international interdisciplinary projects in resource-scarce regions and educational programs.
Prof. Alessandro Fassò
Alessandro Fassò is full Professor of Statistics at the Department of Management, Information and Production Engineering of the University of Bergamo, Italy. He is the former president of The International Environmetrics Society (TIES); member of WG-GRUAN, the Working Group on Global Climate Observing System (GCOS) Atmospheric Reference Observations. He is the founder and former coordinator of GRASPA, the permanent working group of the Italian Statistical Society (SIS) on Environmetrics, www.graspa.org. His research interests are mainly in statistical methods and applications to environmental statistics, air quality, climate variables, sensitivity analysis of environmental models, environmental time-series, spatio-temporal data, and functional data.
A single most difficult task of a science journal editor is to identify, nurture, and retain talented science writers and reviewers, who could masterfully creatively communicate to science to peers and general audience. The objective of the course is to provide tools and resources to stellar students, young promising researchers, and seasoned scientists and practitioners in developing and honing their skills in technical writing, manuscript reviewing and editing.
This course aims to demystify the editorial process and demonstrate a strong training potential of offering constructive feedback to peers and engaging in science communication at all stages of the research and practice endeavours. For the early career researchers and practitioners, this course will help to find their voices and establish their independent paths. For authors with limited publishing and reviewing experience this course will help to build skills, find their voices, and instil self-confidence and self-worth. For senior authors, this course will offer paths to share their knowledge and wisdom. For ISI members (and not yet members), this course will illustrate a broad range of publications supported by ISI’s societies and highlight opportunities and available resources.
Effective communication of science is the essence of humankind’s progress in the 21st Century.
- Junior practitioners and researchers, postdoctoral fellows and graduate students interested in improving manuscripts for submission for top international journals.
- Senior or mid-career practitioners and researchers interested in workforce development and improving reviewer’s skills for top international journals and setting up Special Issues for top international journals in statistics and related disciplines.
At the end of the course participants will be able to:
- create plans for scientific paper preparation, review and editing;
- critically assess the time needed to review and revise a scientific paper;
- develop a sequence of steps for addressing challenging issues in reviewing;
- recognize the essential aspects of ethics of reviewing and editing;
- recognize the essential aspects of constructive feedback;
- practice giving and receiving peer feedback;
- identify ISI publications, their missions, editorial boards;
- build their own network of peers interested in science communication;
- learn how to be a stellar reviewer, an avid technical editor, and an enthusiastic science communicator!
The course will be delivered in two modules, covering specific topics over 2 days. Ech day there will be a 3-hour synchronous instruction, consisting of three blocks. Each 60-min block includes: 20 min talk/lectures + 20 min hands-on experience/exercise + 20 min discussion on tips and recommendations.
Module 1 aims to help young promising researchers and seasoned professionals to develop skills for technical writing, presentation and interpretation of results, manuscript reviewing and editing, creating personal plans for professional development. The blocks are:
- Writing a Winning Nature-style Abstract
- Using Templates, Author’s Guide, and Editorial Resources
- Nurturing Talents
Module 2 aims to help juniors and seasoned researchers to master skills for technical writing, manuscript reviewing and editing, interpretation and discussion of scientific findings, and boosting internal cooperation and international collaboration. The blocks are:
- Structuring a Review
- Proposing and Editing a Topic-specific Special Issue
- Writing Opinion and Editorials
At the beginning of the course students will fill in a brief 5-question entry survey. At the end of each module, students will fill a brief 5-question evaluation survey.
Participants will be provided with examples of material needed for manuscript submission and reviewing, including Cover Letter, Manuscript Templates, Nature-style Annotated Abstract, curated and organized Nature-based resources for authors and reviewers, lecture slides, PDFs, and links to useful resources, tips and checklists. The material will be distributed to participants prior synchronous part for review and preparation.
Participants are expected to use personal laptops and/or digital pads.
