59th WSC in Hong Kong, S.A.R. China, 2013

Upcoming ISI World Statistics Congress in Hong Kong

Hong Kong welcomes you to the 2013 WSC!

The Census and Statistics Department (C&SD) of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region has picked up the torch from Dublin and succeeded as the host of the 59th ISI World Statistics Congress (WSC), which will be held from 25-30 August 2013 in the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC). The HKCEC offers a spacious meeting place and excellent conference facilities for the Congress, including world-class architecture, audio-visual equipment, IT and telecommunication services. It is believed that all the participants will enjoy making professional discussions and doing networking with experts of various disciplines at the venue.

The HKCEC, right at the heart of Hong Kong, is the ideal venue for hosting large scale events such as the 59th WSC.

Preparations by the C&SD for the event is already well underway. To oversee the planning and conduct of the Congress, the Local Organising Committee for the 59th WSC was set-up in early 2010. Under the chairmanship of the Commissioner of the C&SD, the committee members, who come from a diverse background, will work closely with the ISI Local Programme Committee (LPC) and the ISI Scientific Programme Committee (SPC) to develop the scientific programme for the Congress. We are pleased that Professor Kai-wang Ng from the University of Hong Kong and Professor Xu-ming He from the University of Michigan will lead the LPC and SPC, respectively. The call for proposals for the scientific programme will soon be published on the ISI website and the Congress website.

The theme of the upcoming Congress is dedicated to “Youth”. Professor Delia North and Professor Byeong U Park will be the Co-Organisers of the Youth Theme. Efforts will be made to encourage more young statisticians and students to participate in the upcoming Congress.

To provide participants with key information of the upcoming Congress, a website for the Congress (www.isi2013.hk) was launched. Apart from being an information portal, this website will also be a one-stop entry point to all online functions provided to delegates of the Congress. There will also be functions to allow authors to submit their abstracts and full papers for scientific meetings. Also worth mentioning is that the upcoming Congress will be the first WSC that provides the option of virtual participation for those who are unable to come to Hong Kong to attend the Congress for one reason or the other. A webcasting system will be acquired to support real-time participation of some selected meetings via the Internet, whereby virtual participants will have real-time viewing of the speakers’ presentations and PowerPoint slides and may raise textual questions through the instant messaging panels.

All staff members of the C&SD highly treasure the role of being the host of the 59th WSC and are fully committed to making this event a successful one with a particular Hong Kong flavour. Anyone interested in the Congress is encouraged to visit the 2013 WSC website for keeping track of the latest development of the Congress.

We look forward to welcoming you to the 2013 WSC. We believe your trip to Hong Kong for the upcoming Congress will bring you an enjoyable and unforgettable experience.
