Welcome to the Third IAOS Executive Committee Update

We are all now gearing up for our conference in Kiev on 12 – 14 September and look forward to seeing as many of you there as possible. In the meantime, there are many other projects we are taking forward and I hope this note will give you an update and will also encourage you to dip into our website for more information. Many thanks to those of you who have got in touch to offer help. More offers of help would still be welcome – see below.

Your Executive Committee and the Work programme

We are increasingly using our website as a place to record our activities, and as a basis for future communication with you, the members. You will find the Minutes from recent Executive Committee meetings there, details of our membership and also our income and expenditure accounts and projected budget for the year. 

Our Work programme is a living document and will be updated as our work progresses. We are always interested to hear any feedback you may have.

Delivering successful conferences and workshops

Our biennial IAOS conference in the Ukraine in September is drawing near and you may still register for attendance via the website, or even on the day. Please have a look at the conference website and register as soon as possible.

Members Meeting

An IAOS Members meeting has been scheduled during the Kiev conference, on Wednesday 12 September at 12:30 pm. Topics for this meeting will be: the IAOS President’s report; latest financial update; formal review of our Statutes, plans for the 2014 conference and a new membership campaign. Further details will be distributed to members very soon. We are also hoping to arrange a meeting on Professional Ethics.

Statisticians’ Training Event

Young statisticians are invited to attend a training session on ‘good practices in dissemination and communication of statistics’. This event will take place on Tuesday 11 September at the Ukraine Statistical Office. Further details will be published on the conference website.

Young Statisticians’ prize

The winners of the 2012 Young Statisticians’ Prize have been announced and published here on our IAOS website. There will be a 2013 prize awarded at the WSC Hong Kong next August. Details will be published soon.

World Statistics Conference Hong Kong 2013

I will be chairing a session at the WSC on ‘New challenges facing Official Statistics’ and have a very interesting panel lined up for the discussion. Further details will be advertised on the ISI website soon.

Satellite Conference in Macau

A satellite conference is being arranged in Macau on Friday 24 August, jointly hosted with IASE, with a theme of ‘statistics education for progress, youth and official statistics’. Developing and supporting the membership

Our current membership literature is being updated and a new leaflet highlighting the benefits of IAOS membership will be available during the Kiev conference.

An invitation for you to get involved

You have demonstrated your interest in official statistics by joining the IAOS. If you want to help us take forward our programme of work and help us make the Association more relevant to your needs, then please contact me and get involved. We are particularly looking for offers of help in the area of updating our website.
