Economist - Development Data Group (World Bank)


The World Bank's Development Data Group is seeking to recruit an economist with knowledge and experience in social sector indicators and analysis. The economist will work with the Socio-demographic Data Team that is responsible for producing sections of the World Development Indicators (WDI) that includes poverty, inequality and social development indicators. The candidate should therefore have strong analytical skills and experience in working with large datasets as well as sample survey data, along with knowledge of policies and programs in the fields of poverty, and at least two of the following: health, education, labor and employment, migration and urbanization.


Specific responsibilities will include the following:

•  Conduct poverty and inequality data quality assessments and related analysis; contribute in reviewing and preparing technical notes and presentations relating to poverty and inequality data; create meta-data and update electronic files on sources and definitions of data as well as the methods used to adjust raw series and calculate indicators; respond to data queries on poverty and income inequality; and participate in related workshops and training events.


•  Contribute to the expansion and improvement of the Open Data program, particularly in efforts to develop and curate a database with sub-national socio-economic indicators.


•  Provide input into the People section of the World Development Indicators, the Bank’s statistical flagship publication.  This will require liaising with various UN agencies, the Bank’s Human Development Network, the Research Group in the Bank’s Development Economics Vice-Presidency, and with country units in the regional networks.
