Call for Short Course Proposals

ISI Short Course Committee, Hong Kong

The ISI Short Course Committee, Hong Kong (SCCHK) is a formal committee of the International Statistical Institute (ISI) appointed by ISI President Jae C. Lee and the ISI Executive Committee to review proposals and make final recommendations for the program of short courses to be offered in conjunction with the 59th World Statistics Congress (WSC) of the International Statistical Institute that will be held from 25-30 August 2013 in Hong Kong.

The ISI Short Course Committee, Hong Kong is inviting the executive of the ISI Associations and the ISI membership at large to submit proposals for short courses for the 2013 WSC short course program. Short course proposals should be submitted electronically to Steve Heeringa (SCCHK Chair, This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. ). An outline and guidelines for proposal submissions is provided below. Proposals should be submitted no later than 20 April 2012. The SCCHK members and our local partners at Hong Kong University will conduct a peer review of the short course proposals and make recommendations to the ISI Executive Committee in June of 2012.

Many details of the short course program for WSC 2013 remain to be worked out. However, the SCCHK can provide the following information to guide instructors who wish to develop and submit a proposal:

  • Courses selected for the 2013 WSC short course program should be 1 or 2 days in length and will be offered immediately before the WSC 2013.
  • Short courses will be offered in partnership with Hong Kong University (HKU) and will held in a venue identified by our HKU partners.
  • Short course topics may be drawn from any area of statistics represented in the ISI and its Associations.
  • A stated aim of the SCCHK and the local organizers is that priority be given to short course proposals that are designed to benefit the training of young statisticians — especially students and young professionals from Asia and other regions of the world.
  • Instructors for selected courses can expect reimbursement for per diem and lodging during the period that they are teaching. SCCHK does not expect to provide an honorarium or to reimburse expenses other than per diem and lodging.

Please use the following outline in submitting your short course proposal:

  1. Short course title
  2. Short course instructor(s)
  3. Course description (500 words or less)
  4. Desired course length (1 day, 2 days)
  5. Description of course materials for students (e.g. course pack, presentation slides, recommended text)
  6. Description of target audience, needed prerequisites, etc.
